Children should be kept at home if they are unwell for us to limit cross infection. We follow the Health Protection Agency guidelines and that is, if your child has had sickness or diarrhoea, they should be kept at home for at least 48 hours after the last episode. This is in line with Pre-School policy 04.05 poorly children. We would also ask parents/carers to inform us immediately if you suspect your child has chicken pox or any other fever or rash-like symptoms. This is so that we can inform other parents/carers where there could be risk of spread to others. Below is a table for Pre-school policies on common illnesses:
Sickness and Diarrhoea -Individuals can return 48 hours after diarrhoea and vomiting have stopped. |
Chicken Pox – At least 5 days from onset of rash and until all blisters have crusted over. |
Conjunctivitis – Keep your child off Pre-School while they are feeling unwell. |
Head Lice – We would prefer a child to be treated before they attend Pre-school. If head lice are spotted during a session a member of staff will inform the parent/carer. |
Impetigo – Until lesions are crusted or healed, or 48 hours after starting antibiotic treatment. |
Hand, Foot and Mouth – Keep your child off Pre-School while they are feeling unwell. |
Coronavirus (COVID-19) – Keep your child off Pre-School while they are feeling unwell. |
Scarlet Fever– Exclude until the child has received antibiotics |
If a child is prescribed a new medicine, for example an anti-biotic they haven’t had before they must not attend Pre-school for 48 hours after the last dose in case of an adsverse reaction.
In the event of a child becoming ill or having an accident at Pre-School, we will telephone parents or named contacts. When a child becomes seriously ill or injured, an ambulance will be called immediately and a parent or named contact informed. A member of the Pre-School will accompany the child to hospital in an ambulance and remain with the child until a parent or responsible person arrives.
Medication will only be administered if a consent form has been signed by a parent or carer following our administration of medicine policy.
